DJ Drama Set To Release West Coast Mixtapes & Working On A Follow Up To Gangsta Grillz Album

He made his bones below the Mason-Dixon line, but DJ Drama is heading to Hollywood with his next series of mixtapes. Ok, more like Los Angeles.

“I got a trifecta of West Coast tapes coming,” Drama told XXLmag.com “I got Snoop Dogg’s tape, Tha Dogg Pound, and Terrace Martin.

“I figured if I go to the West Coast, I might as well come heavy, I might as well come strong, and who better to introduce me than the OGs,” he continued. “I’ma go with the veterans and then help introduce Terrace Martin to the scene.”

The Aphilliates top man said the idea for the Cali mixtape series started when he and the DPG announced they would collaborate on a mixtape. Then Snoop wanted to do an individual project, which Drama said would be titled The City Is In Good Hands. Then the idea to break a new artist came to mind. “He’s incredible,” the DJ said of Martin.

In addition to his West Coast work, Drama said he just began working on the follow-up to his major label debut, Gangsta Grillz: The Album. The Atlantic-backed project was released December 2007 and has sold around 200,000 units since. The Atlanta-based DJ was happy with the numbers, but thinks he can gain greater success with a more rounded single.

“Feds Takin’ Pictures” and “5000 Ones” were Drana’s two singles.

“For me and Atlantic, we both came to the understanding on what we did wrong last time and this is what we can do better,” Drama explained. “If we were able to push that many units strictly off of the brand that I created just imagine what we can do once we have that hit record, once the video is in rotation and once things are everywhere.

“I realize what I’m capable of doing and once we get that record, and get radio and TV on our side, we’re ready to go,” he added. “Other than that, I think my album was highly received. If you look at the climate today, I think I did quite good without a hit record or a [video] on television everyday.”

Dram is looking to release his sophomore album this December.

He’s also working on a number of AMG projects with La The Darkman and protege Willie The Kid. The latter is set to release an independent mixtape album through Asylum Records.

Peedi Crakk Signs New Indie Deal & Preps New Album

Peedi Crakk recently signed with Amalgam Digital, joining Lil' Kim and Joe Budden at the independent label.

"Yup. I'm back! And I feel unstoppable," Peedi said via a press release. "My flow is advanced and as an artist, I'm getting better, especially without the claws of Roc-A-Fella digging at my back."

The former Roc-A-Fella artist was ousted from Jay-Z's old label earlier this year after he'd been held to a contract and not allowed to put out a debut album, according to Peedi.

"I've been a free agent for the past three months and now signing with the Amalgam Digital label for my first project I feel even more unstoppable," the rapper said. "They are providing exactly what Peedi always needed -- proper promotion and distribution."

During the height of his discontent with the Roc, he put out a diss track titled "Sorry," that began circulating last summer, expressing his anger with Jay over his debut project continually being put on hold. But he said earlier this year that that song would be the last of its kind.

"At the time I was upset but now I'm not worried about that anymore," Peedi told SOHH back in January. "You won't hear no new diss records. I'm past that."

However, Peedi's debut album on Amalgam is titled Camel Face Hunting Season.

N*E*R*D is Seeing Sound....or Big Red Apes??

Wow It has been a month of Sundays since we have heard any new music from the boy from VA...no not the Clipse, N*E*R*D that is. Pharrell, Chad, & Shay have created a MONSTROUS new sound that actually matches the big red ape on the cover of the new cd (seen above). Also it seems to me that the N*E*R*D boys are paying homage to the Bape brand (depicted by the big red ape) & the Ice Cream/BBC brand (worn by the guys on the cover). Whatever it maybe the album is going to be hot. I'm excited! I had to miss Glow In The Dark, but this album will be the final piece in the CRS tri-force (Kanye West - Graduation, Lupe Fiasco's The Cool, and N*E*R*D - Seeing Sound) and I can have my own concert in my car! LMAO. Now if we could only get a peek at what the CRS project is gonna look like....hmmmm.

Shakir Stewart Not Interested In Replacing Jay-Z, Just Picking Up Where Hov Left Off

Yesterday L.A. Reid announced that Shakir Stewart had been promoted to executive vice president of Def Jam Recordings. We caught up with the new top dog to discuss upcoming albums from Nas and LL Cool J and to find out how he plans on filling Jay-Z's shoes.

As previously reported, the former Def Jam A&R -known for signing Rick Ross and Young Jeezy to the label - took over Jigga's spot, which has been vacant since the hip-hop mogul stepped down in December.

Stewart, who counts Jay as a friend, says he ready to pick up where the rapper left off.

"I'm up for the task," he said. "I'm up for the challenge of it. I'm not caught up in, 'I'm replacing Jay-Z.' I'm here to deliver and work for my artists and build and expand on the brand. That's my goal."

"Jay-Z's shoes would be hard to fill in any fashion," he added. "So, my focus is really to come in and do my job and help build and create my legacy as well expand the legacy that's already there."

His first priority as EVP is to release albums from hip-hop icons, Nas and LL Cool J.

"This is the most anticipated and probably most controversial album of [Nas'] career and I've worked side by side with him in making this album since day one, " he revealed. "I'm also extremely involved in LL Cool J's album which is coming out at the end of July. To be able to come in and work with two artists of that caliber is me stepping outside of my comfort zone. I'm so honored and excited about the opportunity."

In addition to these hip-hop releases, Stewart is looking forward to releasing a new R&B album from Ne-Yo, re-launching Rihanna's most recent album and breaking new R&B and pop signees.

"My focus, as I step into this position is to put out great music, all genres of music," he says.

Usher Grabs #1 Spot "With Here I Stand"

After a four-year hiatus, Usher is came back strong with his new disc Here I Stand. The follow-up to 2004's smash Confessions, just barely missed the gold mark it's first week out.

According to the Nielsen SoundScan, Ursh sold 433,000 units in his first week, making it the second highest debut of 2008 behind Mariah Carey - whose E-MC2 moved 463,000 discs.

As SOHH previously reported, industry insiders predicted the R&B sensation would take the top slot last week, after his first day sales figures stood at 146,000. Usher's last album, 2004's Confessions also topped the charts, selling an incredible 1.1 million copies in its first week. The album, which went on to spend nine weeks at the top of the charts, was crowned the year's best seller.

Also debuting this week was the Sex in the City soundtrack which featured tracks by Jennifer Hudson - who also starred in the film - and Run D.M.C. The disc sold 66,000 copies for the No. 2 spot -- the highest debut for a multi-artist theatrical film soundtrack since Get Rich or Die Tryin', which also started at No. 2 in '05.

Other notable debuts this week included soul legend Al Green new disc Lay it Down, which was produced by ?uestlove of The Roots and Black Eyed Pea singer Fergie's new Deluxe EP. Green entered the charts at No. 9, selling 34,000 units - the highest debut of his career - and Fergie's The Dutchess: The Deluxe E.P. took the No. 46 spot with 11,000 copies sold.

Obama Wins Democratic Nomination

Barack Obama made history yesterday, winning the Democratic nomination for President and becoming the first black nominee ever, for either party.

According to the New York Post, about 17,000 people came out to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota last night to greet Obama with waving signs, wild applause and shouts of victory. Another 15,000 waited outside chanting Barack's catch phrase, "Yes We Can!"

"Tonight we mark the end of one historic journey with the beginning of another - a journey that will bring a new and better day to America," he told the crowd of supporters.

Barack's rival, Senator Hillary Clinton stuck it out to the end - refusing to concede even when her own supporters thought it necessary - Barack complimented the former contender in his speech.

"Our party and our country are better off because of her, and I am a better candidate for having had the honor to compete with Hillary Rodham Clinton," he said.

At the beginning of yesterday's wind-down, which included primaries in Montana (that Obama took) and South Dakota (won by Clinton), Obama only needed 40 delegates to put him at the targeted 2,118 votes that would clinch the nomination. He got that and more, ending the night at 2,154 after a rollout of superdelegate support, according to an Associated Press count.

SOHH readers predicted the win in a poll conducted back in January.

From here, Barack will go up against 71-year-old Vietnam War vet and Republican presidential nominee John McCain, in the race for the presidency.

DJ Khaled Talks New Single, And New Album

We recently caught up with DJ Khaled on the star-studded set of his new music video to talk about his label deal with Def Jam, his global aspirations and his upcoming album.

Khaled is set to kick off his new disc, We Global, with the release of his first single, "Out Here Grindin'" - which features the DJ's usual all-star cast of heavyweights; Akon, Rick Ross, Lil' Wayne, Young Jeezy, Lil' Boosie, Trick Daddy and his own artist Ace Hood.

"I got the whole world on this record," Khaled said at the video shoot for his new single. "We're doing big thing, man. It's going to be a big record. It's going to be another number one."

On We Global, Khaled promises to feature several surprise artists that he has never worked with before. In addition, the Miami based producer/radio personality says the album will contain both songs for the ladies as well as a lot of quality music for the hood.

Khaled also plans to use this album to break Ace Hood, the first artist signed to his new label. As previously reported, back in February DJ Khaled inked a deal with Def Jam for his We The Best Music imprint.

"I always was going to get a label deal joint venture with a big company I was just waiting for the right time," he admitted. "I wasn't sure who I was going to go with. I just was real patient about it."

"I wanted to build my brand up more and break barriers in the game," he continued. L.A. Reid seen my vision and Shakir [Stewart], Lenny S and all of them over there [at Def Jam] seen my vision and gave me an opportunity to be their partners."

With a new record dropping on Koch this fall and a label deal through Def Jam, Khaled felt it was time to trade in his signature catchphrase, "we the best," for a new slogan.

"Right now we hit 'em with that 'we global' now, 'we global, we international,' he explained. "We the best' is never going no where. That's the name of company [but by] being the best you end up being global. You end up touching masses of people and that's what we the best did."

DJ Khaled's new album, We Global, is scheduled to hit stores on September 9th.

Serius Jones Officially Let Go From DTP Records

New Jersey rapper Serius Jones has officially been released from his recording contract with Disturbing Tha Peace/Def Jam records, AllHipHop.com has learned.



The 2005 Fight Klub champion says that while the decision was made around the time of DTP’s renegotiation with Def Jam in March, he only recently received the official clearance to move forward.



Despite the label politics, the rapper is still planning to release his highly anticipated debut Life Is Serius by the end of the year.



“The scenario was built on the fact that I really had a large buzz and a lot of exposure online and throughout the media, exposure that I felt would be capitalized on,” Serius Jones told AllHIpHop.com.



Jones conceded that the initial support and excitement on the part of DTP execs was a determining factor in his signing to the label in late 2006.



“You expect people to pull you into a certain light that they have. [That] is the only reason why I allowed myself to be signed to another rapper essentially,” Serius Jones told AllHipHop.com, referring to DTP label head, Ludacris.



“I thought that they understood how big of a deal Serius Jones was,” the rapper lamented. “But when people are not doing what you think they should, the only option left is just to do it yourself or find another situation. If you can overcome situations like that, it becomes a blessing in disguise because it just makes you understand what a record label is really doing nowadays, which is nothing in terms of building…so it’s like the independent route winds up being the main route for artists these days because it’s these companies, either they don’t know what to do, they don’t wanna do it, or they don’t have the resources to do it the right way.”



Jones has decided to pursue the independent route himself.



He is currently on a promotional tour, prepping for the release of a new mixtape titled Serius Bizness.



The new release, which can be previewed at www.myspace.com/seriusjones, boasts production by Trackmasters and Kwame and appearances by former label mates Shareefa and Bobby Valentino.



The mixtape will serve as the first offering of new music his fans will be hearing since he was originally signed to DTP.



“A lot of the music that y’all have heard online from Serius Jones is three- and four-year-old s**t that other people leaked that they had. When you’re going through legal issues with a company, you can’t release music. Because it does nothing but hurt you. So I really had to kinda starve my audience and my fans by not releasing anything new. But the latest batch of music that I’m gonna put out, you’re gonna hear the difference in quality and my growth as an artist.”

David Banner Pushed Back....Again....

David Banner's long delayed album, The Greatest Story Ever Told, which was scheduled to drop today, has again been pushed back to a later date next month.

This is not the first time that Banner has had his release date moved. As SOHH previously reported, the rapper's fourth solo album was originally scheduled for release last September.

The Greatest Story Ever Told boasts guest spots from Lil' Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Chris Brown, Jim Jones, UGK and Yung Joc, among others. Banner's lead single, "Speaker" featuring Weezy and Snoop was released last year. The Mississippi-based rapper just released a video for his latest single, "Get Like Me" with Brown and Joc.

SOHH recently chopped it up with Banner to talk about his album title.

"I think it's The Greatest Story Ever Told 'cause it's just my life," he explained. "Coming from Mississippi not having major backing, not having no dope money connected to my project. It was just a dude standing out on the corner selling his CDs. Me moving to New York homeless, I stayed in the garment district. Being in Atlanta sleeping on the floor with dogs and just pumping my stuff out of the trunks. Doing whatever it took that didn't compromise my manhood or my spirituality; I did it in order to make it."

"It just got to the point that when I look back on my life and dude told me 'you should write a book,'" he continued. "And all those trials and tribulations from my father dying, to Hurricane Katrina, all of that made The Greatest Story Ever Told."

Young Jeezy & The Game Get Their Own XM Radio Shows

Music lovers from the West Coast and South will receive equal representation this week, when XM Radio debuts a pair of new shows featuring rappers The Game and Young Jeezy.



The hour-long shows, which are slated to air on XM’s Channel 66 Raw Hip-Hop station, will include a different host who will play music and interview other artists each week.



The Game’s show, Black Wall Street Radio, will feature the Compton, California MC and a rotating roster of hosts that includes Juice, Nu Jersey Devil and DJ Haze.



The show will air at 8 p.m. ET every Friday beginning June 6. C.T.E. Radio will premiere on Saturday (June 7) and features Young Jeezy as well as fellow hosts, Blood Raw, Slick Pulla, Roccett, 211 and DJ Infamous from Atlanta-based Corporate Thugz Entertainment.



The show will air at 6 p.m. ET every Saturday. The debut of the new shows come as XM celebrates Black Music Month.



The station will broadcast a variety of special programs highlighting live performances and interviews with influential artists this month, to highlight musical contributions made by African-Americans.



Artists featured include rapper Flo-Rida, Ne-Yo, Jeffrey Osborne, Teyanna Taylor, Karina, Howard Hewitt and Quincy Jones.



As previously reported, XM will premiere Dipset Radio, a new show featuring members of the Harlem-based rap collective, on Thursday (June 5).



Rappers Cam’Ron, Juelz Santana, Jim Jones, Duke Da God, Hell Rell, JR Writer, Freekey Zekey and 40 Cal will alternate as hosts for the show, which will air at 8 p.m. ET on Thursdays.

Shakir Stewart Fills Jay-Z's Open Spot At Def Jam

Island Def Jam Music Group (IDJ) has announced that Shakir Stewart will effectively fill the vacancy left by rapper/mogul Jay-Z, who announced his resignation as President of Def Jam in December of 2007.



Stewart, who was senior VP of A&R, was named Executive Vice President of Def Jam Recordings Antonio “L.A.” Reid announced today (June 3.)



Stewart will report directly to Reid and Steve Bartels, Chief Operating Officer of IDJ and will be responsible for all day-to-day matters regarding Def Jam.



His responsibilities include signing new talent, overseeing producers and guiding the creative vision of the legendary label.



"The bold young management style that Shakir has established at Def Jam is one of the major reasons behind the label's success today," IDJ CEO L.A. Reid told AllHipHop.com in a statement. "From his solid roots in music publishing, he has grown to master the world of hip-hop and urban music."



Stewart has worked closely with Reid and Steve Bartels in the past and helped guide the label to win 26 Grammy nominations during 2007’s award ceremonies.



"The past four years have been an unforgettable experience for me," Stewart said. "Having the opportunity to work with a brilliant music man such as L.A. Reid, along with the most amazing team in the music business, has afforded me the knowledge and inspiration to take the next step in my career and continue to amplify and expand Def Jam's stellar reputation in the industry."



Stewart, an Oakland, California native, got his start in the music business promoting shows for a variety of artists, including Nas, Luke, Too $hort and others.



Shortly after graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing, Stewart formed Noontime Music and landed a joint venture deal with Epic Records.



He later signed on as Creative Director for Hitco Music Publishing, a company owned by Reid.



Stewart has signed or worked with a number of influential artists, including Destiny’s Child, Ciara, Outkast, Usher and others.

Clipse Wave Good Bye To Jive, And Hello To Rick Rubin

OK this has to be the single greatest news in new Hip-Hop history!!! I geeked all over the house when I read the article. If you can not tell by the title then you are pretty dim. My favorite two man group, while besides Little Brother has left on of the worst majors for Hip-Hop to one that is turning out to be the best. That's right folks those Clipse boys have left the house that Clive Davis and LA Reid built for the house that Rick Rubin and Hip-Hop (famous for managing Just Blaze and Kanye West) are rebuilding.

So here is how it happened. It has kind of been a slow process but good things come to those who wait. Everybody knows by now the kind of drama the Clipse, The Neptunes, and Star Trak (The Neptunes label) had with releasing the Clipse second album Hell Hath No Fury. If you don't I will do a quick run down for you. The Clipse first album Lord Willin came out in the summer of 2002. With the hit “Grindin'” and “When the Last Time” fueling the album it quickly became a classic album and certified gold in its first month and the Clipse became a household name. The album also took The Neptunes sky rocketing into super producer-dom as they became the go to guys for any album. And the star of the label got even brighter when The Neptunes released there Attack of the Clones album. But when the Clipse started working on material for their second album things went into a full stop.

The Neptunes and their Star Trak label along with artist the Clipse, Kelis, Fam-Lay on Def Jam, and N.E.R.D on Virgin got caught in the Jive being redone by their parent label Zomba. The merger caused all of the project for Star Trak to be halted. The contract tie up with Jive resulted in a four year hold up for the Clipse album, Kelis leaving the label, Fam-Lay's debut on Def Jam to never happen, and N.E.R.D to have problems with Virgin Records resulting in them leaving the label. Star Trak did not take long to get back up though The Neptunes signed a label deal for their artist with power house label Interscope who also has Dr.Dre's Aftermath Entertainment, Timbaland's Mosley Music Group, and Swizz Beats' Full Surface. But in order to do that The Neptunes had to leave Kelis and the Clipse on previous parent label Jive because those two acts already had steady contracts. When the Clipse, Star Trak, and Jive finally worked out a deal for the Hell Hath No Fury album it was a bitter sweet one. The Clipse were no longer signed to Star Trak, but would still have the album produced by The Neptunes, and the album would be distributed by the Clipse label Re-Up Records and Jive. The album that finally came out after four years and two dated push backs was a dark, brooding album that got tons of praise and another classic rating. Despite the classic rating and rave reviews the album was a commercial disappointment not striking gold like the last but straight lead with a mere 78,000 copies sold. But while Jive had cut them off before the album was even dropped someone was paying attention.

Hip-Hop the man famous for constructing Jay-Z's Blueprint album and for taking two unknowns by the names of Just Blaze and Kanye West and turning them into the elite of new school Hip-Hop producers, was paying attention to the Clipse boys. Also a man by the name of Rick Rubin was paying attention to Hip Hop and the work he was doing and called him to be President of Columbia Urban, the label that Rick Rubin was redoing. As a side bar, if you do not know who Rick Rubin is delete every Hip-Hop/Rap song on your iPod and don't put them back on till you know who this man is and what he has done. Ok back to the editorial. So with Hip Hop becoming the new president of a urban department that has seen its share of trouble he automatically started recruiting. He had his eyes set on Jim Jones, Remy Ma, and the Clipse to start out with. It seems Hip Hop's dream starters started arriving before anyone could blink. Jim Jones was the first to sign. His deal resulted in a joint deal between Koch and Columbia, in which Koch handled all of the radio promotion and marketing with Columbia handling distribution and everything else. Not even a week and a half later the Clipse were official signed. The Clipse deal resulted in distribution for their Re-Up label and deal for them and their artist. Now as a result the Clipse plan on releasing an album in 2009 along with a Re-Up Gang (the Clipse, SandMan, and Ab-Liva) album. Also their new album is not only being worked on by The Neptunes, but also fellow VA producers Timbaland and Danja, and Dame Grease.

Here is also something interesting, not even a week after the Clipse were dropped by Jive and picked up by Columbia, former labelmate Kelis was also dropped from Jive. And a few months ago Papoose who was suppose to be Jive's poster child was also dropped even though he signed a multi-million dollar deal. So is Jive weeding out there core urban department? I mean they still have UGK, T-Pain, Chris Brown, The Pack, Ciara, Anthony Hamilton, Huey, J-Kwon, Dre, Donell Jones, Lil Mama, OutKast, R.Kelly, Sean P. of the YoungBloodz, Too $hort, and Usher. Now their actually cash cows are R.Kelly, OutKast, Usher, Chris Brown, T-Pain, and maybe Ciara. But the rest are expendable. Like Jive does not even need a urban department at all. And what about Columbia? They have DMX, John Legend, Beyonce, Three Six Mafia, Bow Wow, Ray Cash, and Omarion...really as far as Hip-Hop goes Columbia is a little light. So things are changing the industry again. Some for the better, some for the worst.

OK loyal Hip-Hop Spill fans I am going to give you something that I have been cooking up for a while now....while not now now, but now later. Up until and after the release of Jay-Z's new album American Gangster, I am going to be doing ongoing pieces that I have dubbed The Roc Files. I know, I know there was a compilation album by the same name but this is not even connected with that. I will be breaking down the beginnings of The Roc, the happy days, the hard times, the label break up, and everything inbetween. Stick wit your boy and you will get all the skinny...

A Little Less Blue Magic, But A Little More Gangsta

OK OK OK!! So we are less than a month away from the Jay-Z concept album that is coming out. There are two reasons I am excited about this movie. One Jay-Z has not dedicated himself to an album of this caliber since Reasonable Doubt or the Blueprint. Second American Gangster the album is being inspired by American Gangster the movie that is starring Denzel Washington as Frank Lucas one of the baddest sons of a SHUT YO MOUTH, in the 70's. Enough playing around lets get to what I was here for.

Well after doing some searching around I figured out who was doing beats for the album, who was not, who is on the album, and the track listing. It looks like the usual suspects are behind Hova beat wise. The Neptunes make a trip from outer space to Earth to bless Hov a little, but according to Jay he does not know if Blue Magic will make the final cut and he might just make it a bonus track. Just Blaze is back in the building and hopefully he will give us some dope ass beats now that the stuff for Saigon is done for the time being. Kanye's new friend DJ Toomp is making an appearance on the album as a producer, which to me is so off base that it is perfect!! Speaking of Kanye, I heard he submitted two beats to Jay but Hova passed on them. Buuuuut Kanye's mentor and Jay-Z's friend No ID is on the album, which is a complete surprise to me. Grind Music partners Sean C and LV are doing a majority of the album. To top things off Jermaine Dupri has also done tracks for American Gangster AND P.Diddy and his Hitman Squad are involved as well. That is quite a list lil buddies! But there is no word if Dr. Dre will make a return appearance or Swizz Beats for that matter. It looks like the only guest appearances on the album are going to be Beanie Sigel on "Ignorant Shit" and Bilal on a track called "Fallen" which is not seen on the track listing I gave you last week. Sooo it looks like American Gangster might be getting an overhaul.

SO there you have it. Instead of one bonus track it looks like we are getting two or more according to Hov, and the list of producers is the same but a little different than we as Jay-Z fans are use to. Well by now if you are any kind of Hip-Hop fan or fan of Jay-Z you know that he has a new album coming out on November the 6th. What you also might know is that the album will be coming out a week after the American Gangster Movie staring Denzel Washington and Russell Crow (two of my favorite actors). The new Hova album is suppose to be the unofficial soundtrack to the movie, hence the release dates being a week apart.

Now for those of you that don't know what American Gangster is about,it is about Frank Lucas, a common driver for a crime kingpin who becomes the leader of the pack after the original dies unexpectedly. Frank Lucas becomes a very power crime kingpin and ruled Harlem in the 1970's. Frank Lucas is being played by Denzel, while Russell Crow plays Richie Roberts, the cop that tries to take down Lucas. American Gangster also stars my boy Common and T.I..

Album Review: KanYe West - Graduation

COT DAMN!!!! How long has it been folk!? DAMN a year really? Word...OK OK OK, but ya boy is back though and what better way to come back than to do a review on easily the best Hip-Hop album of the year. What album you say? Well KanYe West's Graduation!!! So let's jump into the biz and stop play like Wii and get into it...hitting the keys parts of the album.

The album starts off with you traditional KanYe West wake up, good morning joint. Well the song that kicks off the album is called "Good Morning." Ye goes through the regular motions of how he barely passed, cheated on every test, look at every ass instead of doing work, and gets to the classic line of the teacher tell him "You got D's mu***** D's, Rosie Perez!!" Classic!! And he says it with such emotion that it is one of the funnier lines in the album. The song raps up with a glorious sample of J-Hova (Jay-Z for the uneducated). This will be the only "appearance" by J on the album folks....sorry...

Next up is the song "Champion." The song uses a sample that is odd to Hip-Hop fans but right for the song and what Ye is doing. "Kid Charlemagne" by Steely Dan is the sample and makes the song. This song is a favorite personal favorite of mine. Subject matter is how the fans see him in their eyes, what his pops and mom did to make sure he was straight, and normal Ye ish. The track is very high energy and leaves you wanting more seeing that it is the shortest song on the album.

"Let's get lost tonight/ you can be my black Kate Moss tonight..." You know what’s coming right!? "Stronger!!!" Yeah the thing fans of the song will realize is that the song sounds completely different that what they are use to with the radio version. Did the sample change? No same Daft Punk sample...but what did change is the drums. Did anyone notice how much harder the drums hit? I did!! And that was all do to every ones favorite VA chubby boy turned Incredible Hulk, Timbaland. Yes I know...OMG Timbo and Ye on a track!! Well its sounds good on CD and on paper and this is only the first time it was done on the album. Stand alone banger for years to come...

"I Wonder" the next song is another personal favorite of mine because of the catchy sample and the way it's chopped. Using "My Song" by Labi Siffre, the song is a glorious experience that only Ye can provide, with Jon Brion (From Late Registration) on the keyboard and Omar Edwards on piano and synth for help. Jon Brion and Omar Edwards are what make this song for me personally...what can I say I am a sucker for the keys...maybe that’s why I like Alicia Keys so much..Hmmmmm...

WELCOME TO THE GOOD LIFE!!! "Good Life" is the first DJ Toomp (of T.I. fame) on the album. You can tell because of the thicka than a snicka synth sounds in the song. This song is also getting some help from the Incredible Hulk aka Timbaland for more drum programming. Also on the song is every ones favorite rapper turned singer T-Pain. I have to say that I have never heard T-Pain sound so good before and you know what it is probably because he is under the direction of Ye. But the beat itself is a triple threat because of the mixture of Ye, Timbo, and Toomp...kinda like the new Celtics, Garnett, Pierce, and Allen. Just something to think about.

"La La La La wait till I get my money right..." Well Ye is past that point but that is the chorus for "Can't Tell Me Nothing." One thing you will notice is the Jeezy ad-libs and yes that is him. The song originally was meant for Jeezy but he past on it and Ye decided to use it for himself. This song also brings back Toomp for a return appearance. The thick haunting synth cords make the song what it is...an ode to how you can't say ish to Ye because he has heard it all before.

The next song is one that no one thought was going to be on the album. "Barry Bonds" is another ego boosting song for Ye where his gets to brag a lil...well a lot. This is the first song on the album that Ye didn't do the beat for. The thickness of it makes you think Toomp since that has been the theme thus far. But it is actually Nottz who does a wonderful job at bringing the best out of Ye and Lil Wayne. This guest spot, beside all his numerous others, is the best I have heard Weezy in a long time, maybe because he was not hyped up on that syrup. Being the only rapper guest appearance on the album I was saddened to see that Jay-Z was not on this one. I'm not saying take out Weezy, but add J to it. Just saying....

"Drunk And Hot Girls" is the Mos Def assisted song on the album. I was shocked to see that Mos was singing and not spitting hot fire like he is known for. But Ye and Black Dante make it work all so nicely. The song details of how Ye turns to mess wit a drunk and hot girl but it ends up not going his way. And then the chorus kicks in "We go through to much bulls*** to mess with these drunk and hot girls." Mos Def's singing really does set off the song, making this a funny yet true song.

"Flashing Lights" is another song that hits you right from the jump making it an easy favorite. The song details how much Ye hates being caught by the media's flashing light, but is also an ode to his girl and how much he wants to spend time with her but the flashing light of the biz keep him busy. Hook wise we hear from an underground R&B favorite. Dwele anyone??? Yeah the dude is dope and you know it so quit hating. An added bonus the song is sample free!! And sounds damn good!!! So to all those who say Ye can't do a song without a sample kill ya self, cause he can!!!

"Everything I Am" is another song that was meant for someone else but ended up being Ye's. The song was meant for Common, but ended up in Ye's pocket cause Com already had a DJ Premiere assisted song on his album. And yes I said it Premo is on the chorus doing his scratch magic. I love that old skool cats like Premo are coming back around because the game needs it. Next song...

"The Glory" which contains a sample from Laura Nyro's "Save the Country" and Mountain's "Long Red" is chopped nicely and almost J.Dilla (R.I.P) like. The chorus is awesome because Ye calls in the whole family and then some to help out, most noticeable Mos Def and John Legend. The song is another feel good high energy KanYe joint that you should be use to by now but if not get use to it because he will have more to come.

Every artist worth their salt pays homage to where they came from and proud of being from there. Ye does his thing and does a whole sound about his favorite girl Windy. It details from talking about meeting her, leaving her, and about the kids he left behind that are just like him. The chorus is done by Chris Martin who happens to be Hip-Hops favorite white guy seeing as he has also done songs with Jay-Z and Swizz Beats. Again a non sample KanYe song that comes off beautifully. And with percussion done by Jon Brion it is all sweet.

The last song is not produced by KanYe, but his new friend DJ Toomp. "Big Brother" is an ode to Jay-Z which might come off as a diss at first but is actually a show of respect to Hova. Ye recounts the times that he had with Hova and about how he feels like the little brother that was always told to go in the house because he was not old enough to play with the big boys. Ye goes on to say that in order to be on par with big brother he will have to beat him at his own game. The song is my most personal favorite because I have two bros that have my utmost respect and have thought me and are still teaching me to play with the big boys.

The cover art work for the album is awesomely amazing!! It is done by Takashi Murakami and I checked his artwork out and this dude is so the business!! Check him out PLLEEEEAAAAASSSSEEE!!!

Ok Ok Ok! What up people! Your boy Xcalibur is back and I decided to show support to my boy DJ Drama (ipod King). I love this cat! I feel like I know him because of his mixtapes. In fact dare I say I am spoiled be this man. I mean his mixtapes are so dangerous that I don't really look for anyone else's. Ok here we go and as Drama would say "PAY ATTENTION!"

If you are not familiar with Drama's mixtapes then you have been living under a rock for the pass couple of years. This man has redefined to way mixtape is done. He takes the latest and greatest in hip-hop and does special editions with content that is exclusive and will keep you guessing who is going to be on the next one. Don't think that the south is the only target he goes all over the map with these Gangsta Grillz exclusives

Now many of you might know Drama because he is T.I.'s DJ of choice, if you want to get technical both helped elevate each others careers. In fact Drama is signed to T.I.'s Grand Hustle record label and plans on release an official Gangsta Grillz album (more on that later). Drama is a busy man nowadays. He has his own label and a crew of DJs and artist that are ready to cause havoc and make sure you get "Aphilliated."

Time to introduce the crew. First I have to introduce the Aphilliates DJ crew. The Aphilliates are Drama, DJ Don Cannon(CANNON!!), DJ Sense(Trendsetta!), DJ Jamad, DJ Ox Banga, and DJ Jaycee(who is also down with DTP). Ok Ok now to introduce the artist on AMG (Aphilliates Music Group). These cats are dangerous and ready to blow. They are Wille the Kid & Detroit Red (correct me if I'm wrong Drama). Now that you have been brought up to speed lets continue. Drama has just completed a deal with Asylum Records to debut his artist. I think this is awesome because these cats will get the exposer they deserve and not just on mixtapes.

Don't think that just because Drama has been busy with the official album and his artist that he won't still bang out mixtapes. I heard over the wire that he is doing on with Gillie the Kid (not to be confused with Willie the Kid) and OutKast. OutKast!!! Do you know how big that is?!?!? He has already worked with so many south legends already and OutKast is finally coming! And Andre is going to be rapping!! Rapping SON!! OK I'm excited and can't wait...As far as the official Gangsta Grillz
goes all I know is that all of AMG and Grand Hustle is going to be on there, but there are also a bunch of other artist that are going to be on there but I don't know who. The project is been kept under lock and key and not a lot about it has been given away, but I will let you know when more things about it develops.

Pharrell- In My Mind

Whut it dew, Whut it dew! Your boy is back in the building and doing something he has not done in a long time. Dare I say an album review...Gasp! I took you to Texas, to North Carolina, and to Chi-Town. Now I'm going to take you to Virginia to get on the mother ship. Its Star Trak time and Pharrell is your guide with In My Mind.

The album is genius and sticks to the Neptune formula by pushing the creative boundaries. After waiting what seemed like space-ages for Pharrell's album, I was not disappointed. The fourteen track journey was joint that and gives you a look into Pharrell's mind. The first single "Can I Have It Like That" and the second single "Angel" were just introductions into the album for me, the rest of the tracks were prime like choice cut beef(anybody want a steak?). Now to the rest of the album…

"How Does It Feel" is an up-tempo joint that will automatically catch because the drums are sick and Skateboard's words slick. The chorus will have you saying "Yessur!" along with him while he tells his plans for getting cake. The song is more or less like a introduction of Skateboard P and what he is all about. One of the many choice cuts on the album. Let's move forward.

The joint "Best Friend" is a song that P uses to get a lot of things off his chest. In the song he talks about his mother, grandmother, Chad (his best friend and Neptunes partner), his career and anything else that he has kept bottled up. This song was personal to me because...well listen to the chorus. Now You can not listen to this song without listening to "You Can Do It Too" which comes right after. This song is a motivator to anyone listening to the song. Pharrell basically tells everybody out there that they can reach for their dreams the same way he did and succeed. Two of the must listen to's on the album.

"That Girl" featuring Snoop Dogg is the transition track on the album. It brings in Pharrell Williams as we exit Skateboard P's mind. One this track Pharrell sings and raps while Snoop does a verse and Charlie Wilson helps with background. This track is an instant favorite. It also prepares you for the R&B part of the album. "Young Girl featuring Jay-Z/I Really Like You Girl" is a all out awesome story about a crush on one end and also follows up with an ode to how much he likes the girl. It is a personal favorite of mine. Plus how many chances are we going to get to hear Jay-Z...well until his upcoming album.

Well I could give away the whole album, but I would rather you listen to it for yourself. Pharrell does a brilliant job giving us a tour of his intergalactic space-age mind. All the production is done by Pharrell and the album has guest appearances by Gwen Stefani, Slim Thug, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Pusha T, Nelly, Kanye West, and Lauren. Also listen to the closing cut on the album. "Skateboard P Presents: Show You How To Hustle" well shows you how to hustle. Also the album comes in like four different covers which is awesome, but that is coming from a Star Trak N.E.R.D., haha funny...ok never mind I tried.

Shout out to the whole Star Trak fam. I'm out this piece. They found out that I didn't have a ticket for the spaceship ride. I'm out like Mike Tyson. Afrolutely!!!

Mos DEFinite

Hey peoples!! Xcal is back in the building to give you a piece of my ever running mind(me and my brother call it thinking in patterns). As you can see from the title my next subject happens to be The Mighty Mos Def!

First let me start by giving a shout out to both Mos and my big cuz RhapsodE who opened for The Mighty Mos not to long ago. Now as for my connection with Mos Def I know him through his music and his acting. I identify with the music more because that is my M.O., my life blood...Period. My first introduction to Mos I want to say was around the time "Ms. Fat Booty" came out. Loved to song to death but because my ear was not to Hip-Hop like it is now I had to prior experience with him or the music he made. As I got older I started to more about Mos, but it was not only him. I was opened up to a new phase in Hip-Hop that was not all that new, but it was new to me. Being opened up to the likes of Mos, Common, Talib Kweli, Hi-Tek, Pharoahe Monch, and Black Star(Mos Def and Talib Kweli) gave me a look into what Hip-Hop really is and not for what most of the younger generation identify it as today. My introduction did not end there but had just begun.

My brother JT and I started working together when I was a freshman in high school. The four years I spent working with him shaped my view on Hip-Hop and dare I say kept me from the corruption that most kids were receiving do to the corporate Rap that was being spoon fed to them by the corporate juggernauts. Out of pure fate, in high school one of my best friends was a guy by the man of Ruben (we called him Ish). We exchanged music all the time because to expand our libraries, which were already huge, we had to rely on who had the lastest or the old joints that no one could get their hands on. One day after doing the weekly music exchange at my locker(which was the usual spot) he asked me if I had Mos Def's Black On Both Sides. Remembering the "Ms. Fat Booty" joint I asked if he had it and the next day I had a copy of it in my pale geeky palms. And the rest will be saved for another day cause I am sure you don't want to hear my trips down memory lane which were not that long ago.

For those who are not familer with the work of Mos here it is. His albums include Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are Black Star, Black On Both Sides, and The New Danger. As an actor Mos Def was in God Bless the Child(1988), You Take the Kids(1990), The Hard Way (1991), The Cosby Mysteries (1994), Ghost (1997), Brooklyn South (1997), Spin City (1998), Where's Marlowe? (1998), NYPD Blue (1998), Island of the Dead (2000), Bamboozled (2000), Carmen: A Hip-Hopera (2001), The Wayne Brady Show (2001), Monster's Ball (2001), Showtime (2002), Civil Brand (2002), Brown Sugar (2002), My Wife and Kids (2002), The Italian Job (2003), The Woodsman (2004), Chappelle's Show (2003-2004), Focused Digizine #1 (2004) , Something the Lord Made (2004), Lackawanna Blues (2005), The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005), The Boondocks (2005), 16 Blocks (2006), and Journey to the End of the Night (2006). I probably gave you more Mos Def than you can handle and half of the stuff I named off I have never seen him in. Have you?

At first I thought about writing this article a while back because I had not heard Mos Def blessing the mic in a while. Not to mention he said that he was only going to bless us with with one more album and is going to just act. At that point I had fainted and double-taked at the news. When the news of his album being worked on and pushed back numerous times, I gave up all hope and started to get use to Mos Def THE ACTOR(even though he was very funny in The Boondocks and in the Chappelle Show. Then came the day when I was listening to Little Brother mixtape and heard him going at it toe to toe with LB. I screamed like a nerd and ran around the house. When Rawkus Records: Best of Decade One came out and my brother J got me a copy I nerded out once again cause there was all the great Mos songs, plus more. My faith restored as Mos as an MC I was happy to receive any guest appearance or any hint of new rejuvenated Mos Def. Plus I knew in the back of my mind that Mos was not going to leave us with just The New Danger, which was Black Jack Johnson(Mos Def's rock group) heavy. And like a true Hip-Hop Head I was correct.

Last week the word came across the Hip-Hop wires that Mos Def was blessing us with new material and new shoes. Through a deal with Converse, Mos Def has a new shoe out called "Music." And his new album True Magic is due out September 26th via Geffen Records. So to all you Mos fans be happy he is back and better than ever. Now if we can just get him and Kweli to do another Black Star album i'll be happy.

Well Hip-Hop true believers, that is it for me I am going to make mince meat of these pixilated football players. I'm out like a light. Afrolutely!!!

Why Is Little Brother Still Slept On?

Ok, I know I have been gone for a minute but trust I have not forgotten about you. I just made on of the biggest moves of my life and have just found a new topic to talk about. Subject Little Brother...

I am in no way shape or form dissing these cats so don't say that I am. Ok LB has been out for a second now and the rap sheet these guys have is well impressive to say the least. Albums include The Way You Do It, The Listening, The Minstrel Show, The Chittlin Circuit 1.5( I think there way a Chittlin Circuit before this one), and most recently a mixtape with DJ Drama, Gangsta Grillz: Seperate But Equal
. Now everytime these cats put out new material you see the constant evolution of the group. Phonte always has a witty, yet funny punchlines, Big Pooh brings the aggressive lines, and 9th Wonder's beats seem to get better everytime, his soulful take on records make him as high demand as a producer as anyone else. These are the members that make up Little Brother.

The group as a whole is awesome. But one thing I do not understand is why cats hate on Big Pooh. Granted his punch lines do not hurt as much as Phon-Tigga's he still holds his own. Upon having a conversation with my cousin D-Boi where we were discussing the group he said that he really digs Phonte but sometimes he feels that Pooh does not fit. I told him that Pooh as more than once proven that he can hold his own. Check the freestyle he did over The Neptunes' Imma G beat. So after hearing my analyze of the chemistry of the group he thought and said "I need that mixtape!" I just said "Yeah you do, cause it is better than The Minstrel Show."

Another thing I was bothered with was when listening to a new LB track on xxlmag.com there was somebody that commented on the track asking if 9th was still with the group. I replied "Yes..." The track was from the new Hall Of Justus CD that is coming out. Now for those not familiar with The Hall Of Justus it is a collective of producers and MCs that come from North Carolina. It is made up of Little Brother(Phonte, Big Pooh, 9th Wonder), Foreign Exchange, Away Team(Khrysis and Sean Boog), Big Dho, Chaundon, Joe Scudda, DJ Flash, and L.E.G.A.C.Y.. Now that you are informed let me continue. The CD that the Hall Of Justus is coming out with is going to be produced mostly by 9th Wonder and Khrysis. Just because the rappers of LB chose to rap over another beat does not mean the core producer(9th) has left the group. Also them being rappers cats are going to be throwing beats at them. Second 9th is producing half the album...nuff said. Wait I'm not done with the hatin'.

Next victim...BET. Now if you have read one of my previous blogs you know that I can not, repeat CAN NOT stand BET. Black Entertainment Television lets try Ruining a Generation Television. Now if BET is suppose to be about supporting BLACK artist why did they not support Little Brother when their video for "Lovin' It" was out? Another question is why don't they support other underground cats like LB? Does them being with Viacom have anything to do with it? The answer is no...They have been doing this before Bob Johnson sold out. They are just now deciding to take off BET Uncut. Uncut was a bad format to begin with. The only good thing about it was that underground cats got some play...good and bad. The main thing about Uncut was not for underground videos but for the damn near soft core porn ones...you know the ones. So riddle me this Batman...Why did MTV(Not a black station) pick up LB's video? Answer: They are more true Hip-Hop and R&B than the channel that is suppose to be for us!! Has anyone else noticed the amount of black shows they pick up and actually stay? The have a whole video channel for Hip-Hop and R&B and they showcase underground! What happen to the one BET was suppose to be developing?? Anybody know?? Cause I don't. So it is fair to say that yet again BET is getting their ass handed to them. And they wonder why no one is watching. On an added note, the DMX and Keyshia Cole shows are not going to save you rating. Also VH1 is doing yet another Hip-Hop Honors which I love to death, but BET is just now putting together a Hip-Hop Awards Show...WTF!?!?!? How long has VH1 been doin' this? Going on three or four years? Basic jest BET is slow...real slow. If Black people where every thrown back into slavery and only channel we had was BET we would be SOL PERIOD.

So everyone show Little Brother some love. They make GOOD Hip-Hop music and so does the Hall Of Justus. Go pick up the new Hall Of Justus CD Soldiers Of Fortune on October 3rd and pick up Lupe Fiasco's debut Lupe Fiasco's Food and Liquor on September 19th!! The Geico Lizard just called and I'm going to get some pie and chips with him. I'm done like Hammer(lol). One!!!

What The Hell?!?! When Did Selling Out Become Cool!?!?

Okay this is your boy DJ Xcalibur back to hit you once again with all that is important in the Hip-Hop culture. This is a topic that has been bothering me for the last couple of days...Selling Out! Are some rappers/producers so tight for money that the jump on the first project that drops into their not so hot lap! Thanks to Sickamore(What up 80' s baby!), he brought this to the light for me when I was reading one of his articles on XXLMAG.com. When did endorsing and rapping on someone like Paris Hilton's record become cool!!! Seriously! Can someone answer me that! As a matter of fact do not even bother because I know what you are goin' to say, "They are just doing it for the money." Bulls***! The cats that i am refering to are Fat Joe and Jadakiss. Oh and here is another list of people working on the project, Three Six Mafia, Lil' Jon, and Scott Storch.

Now Fat Joe and Jada(as much as I like him) I do not think I can let this slide. Fat Joe called Paris Hilton's record/album quote "phenomanal." WHAT THE HELL! Ms. Hilton must have given Joey Crack a monster blowjob for that one... Instead of endorsing a spoiled rotten, rich, and need I say straight racist dumbass, why don't you try keeping your failing label together! Joe has cats on his label who are good but will never see the light of day. Tony Sunshine, Geddy, and Prospect have officially passed benchwarmer status as of like two or three years ago. They have been sitting on the damn bench so long they have started to grow roots! The only smart one at this point is Remy Ma! She announced that she is officially done with Terror Squad and is looking for a new situation as of this week or late last week. Joe if you can get your s*** together maybe I can start liking you music again.

Next, as much as I hate to do this I have to rip into Jada. Dawg, you have to focus on getting D-Block on the ground and running. When I first heard you, Styles, and Sheek were starting this and the bread winner for D-Block was going to be J-Hood I was excited...but it seemed the steam ran out and the label situation with you, SP the Ghost, and Interscope were goin' sour, it seemed like the train came to a full halt. Get back on it man...PLEASE!! New York needs you, Hip-Hop needs you, and we(Hip-Hop Heads) need another LOX album. Come on maaan!

Now me being a producer I have a soft spot for producers so I think I am going to be a little more bias. Lil' Jon is Lil' Jon every body wants a piece of the crunk even Dave Chappell...but Paris Hilton does not need any. Ms. Hilton is crunk enough by herself. Come on look at the sex tape as a reference. Also, now that Three Six has won a Oscar(ALL OF HIP-HOP STAND UP!!) everyone wants a piece of them now. It was uber nice to see everyones jaw drop when they won too. Mr. Tuff Jew I am starting to lose faith in you homie...I dig your beats and you have monster skill and starting your own label is cool. I can understand venturing out but you signed Brook Hogan(seed of wrestler Hulk Hogan).....'nuff said.

Nas, Jay-Z, & Def Jam....Still In the Building!!

Whoa!!!! It feels like i have been gone for fiflity days, but I'm back like cancer that never left! Okay so here is the update on Nas, Jay-Z, and Def Jam.

As most know by now Rick Ross is Def Jam's newest star. He has a joint deal through Slip-N-Slide(home of Trick Daddy and Trina)and Def Jam. The first single from his album Port of Miami, "Hustlin'" is blowin' up!!! To make things even sweeter, there is a remix to the song with Jay-Z and Young Jeezy! How hot is that! Look for Port of Miami to drop sometime this summer.

Next, the boy Nas has a title for his debut Def Jam release and has put out the list of producers who are going to work on it. The album is suppose to be titled Hip-Hop is Dead...The N and is set for a September release. As of right now what I am hearing is that will.i.am, Kanye West, and Just Blaze are the only set producers so far and the homie Hova may be making a guest appearence on the new album. The album is a minute a way so I will keep you updated on anything new.

Now that Def Jam wants to go for the home grown Hip-Hop thing it was only natural that they went a signed The Roots. Their album Game Theory is due this summer and the first single, "Don't Feel Right" is hotter than my girl! Haha, okay back to biz. Expect to dive into a dark listening experience this time around, the first single is the darkest single I have heard from them yet! Sometimes darkness is good. Also there are going to be a few surprises this time around so stay tuned.

Next up to bat...look for Freeway, Shawnna, and Method Man. M-E-T-H-O-D MAAAN! Meth has been gone for a minute, but he is coming back with is new album 4:21. The album is still boiling and cooking, but there are two singles out right now, "Say" featuring Lauryn Hill(Wow!) and "Ya Mean" featuring Fat Joe and Styles P. Shawnna's new album Block Music is I believe set for a late summer release and is suppose to be her best work to date. With the first single "Gettin' Some" "blowin'" up(Haha!)she is goin' for the throat this time...hahaha!!! Her new single "Damn" featuring Chevy P(formally Smoke of Field Mob)is damn good and will hit in a couple of weeks. Freeway's new album titled Free at Last is set for a late summer early fall release. For more on Freeway's new project read the previous article.

Also look for new stuff from Joe Budden. His new album The Growth is due in October. Look for new music from Fabolous, Redman, Sam Scarfo, and Ludacris. The sound track to Tyrese and Megan Good's new film Waist Deep is due on June 13. Even though it is on another label look for Lupe Fiasco's new album, Food and Liquor due on June 26 which is executive produced by Jay-Z.

Can G-Unit Get Any Bigger!?!?!?

What's good people? Your boy XLB is back again to hit you off with some Hip-Hop news.

Well, everyone's favorite Roc-a-fella, Philly underdog has made a surprising move. Our boy Freeway has signed with and is a official member of G-Unit. Wow, I know him and 50 were cool,but I did not see this coming at all! The deal that Freeway got, I have to say is damn good. While he is still on Roc-a-fella/Def Jam he is also on G-Unit. Expect some major things with this one.

We have been waiting on Freeway's new album for the longest. Philadelphia Freeway was so sick, it is always in rotation in my car, home, and ipod. The new album untitled album will have production from Kanye West, Just Blaze, Dangerous LLC, Needlz, and Scott Storch. It will feature 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Young Buck, Beanie Sigel, Mariah Carey, and Black Thought of the Roots. The album will be executive produced by 50 Cent and Jay-Z(who Freeway still has a great relationship with)and will go though Roc-a-fella/Def Jam/G-Unit. This record is going to be crazy!!! We all know 50 can pick beats and Jay-Z can make a good record, so expect some heat. The new album will also address Freeway's relationships with G-Unit, State Property, and with the two other Roc founders Dame Dash and Kareem "Biggs" Burke. Look for a May/June release date.

What The Hell is Wrong with BET!!

Whut it Dew Hip-Hop fans!?! Your favorite black sheep political misfit(Huey Freeman holla back!) is back and I'm here to give you a piece of my mind again. I know I had more album reviews coming for you good people, but today is all about getting something off my mind that has been on it for a few years now.

Okay know that this is a blog dedicated to Hip-Hop, I know most of the people that read this have watched BET at some point in their lives. Being as much as a Hip-Hop fan as I am I only watched BET for one reason....Rap City. Now I was not big into music when the show first started, but I came along when the Rap City: Tha Basement era started and I was a big fan of the show. I fell in love with the booth, where visiting rappers/MCs would freestyle over some of the best beats. To top it off Big Tigga(the host during this era)would get in the booth with them and freestyle his butt off! The show had such a great theme, it was filmed in Mama Tigga's basement and was covered in Hip-Hop posters from all eras, there was a space for the DJ, and a bathroom/booth next to the DJ setup. Everything was going great until BET got the bright idea to reformat their most popular show.

This is where the show started going down hill. The show being redone was mostly due to the fact that Tigga was not happy with BET towards the end of the show. So when Tigga left(which I was not to happy about)the network decided to make changes,by this time Bob Johnson, the founder of BET,had already sold the network to Viacom who all so owns MTV and all its sister stations, Nickelodeon and all its sister stations, an d other television networks. Their solution to this was to drop the basement idea and give the show a more modern look and changing the host. The first host they got was Mad Linx. Linx was cool, but he lacked the charisma that Big Tigga had. In my option he seemed kind of scared to host the show he always sounded read. Well, Linx was later moved to a new show(The Road Show) and was replaced with J-Nicks. J is okay, but yet again Tigga one ups the man by a landslide. By this time the show was still two hours strong, but not for long.

BET then got the brilliant idea to cut the show down an hour making it for me 3-4, instead of 3-5. At this point I was pretty ticked. How in the hell are you goin to cut one of your longest running shows, and one of the most popular down to an hour(this was done to make room for the Road Show). Nice job, I don't hit the crib until three in the afternoon during the school year so that means after I get home unload all my stuff, and sit down to watch it I only have thirty minutes worth of watch time, not even that if you count the fifteen minutes worth of damn commercials. Nice!

Now another show that I watch on and off was 106 and Park. I watched that show from the very beginnning when Free(Sexy) and AJ(Predator)were the host. Even though they pretty much played the same videos everyday, I still watched it for the artists interviews and Freestyle Fridays. Everything was all fine and dandy until that fateful day when Free left.

Well Free, one of my main reasons for watching the show, was gone and they tried to cover it up by sticking AJ on there by himself and saying Free was on vacation (eventhough she was done she still came back every once and a while). By this time word got around that BET was not was not doing Free or AJ right and was not paying them. AJ still stuck in there, but Free was done and fought her way out. Then to every fans surprise a big bomb went off.

AJ finally jumped on board with Free and left the show that they had built together. Put into a tight spot BET had to replace them. Julissa(from the Student Center) was put there to replace Free(which I was not to happy about)and they would get celebs to host along side her, Juelz Santana was on there numerous times. Then came that day when they brought Big Tigga back to fill in for AJ. Tigga was back on a two hour format, but not on the show he would like to be on, but I am pretty sure he is doing it for the paycheck. They are no Free and AJ, but BET said they would do.

So in a span of about maybe one and a half maybe two years BET has torn apart two of their best shows and crazy glued them back together. What the hell is wrong with BET!?! Most of the shows on there are all put together the same way and it is boring. The place that I relied on for Hip-Hop and the celebration of black music has lost th e sharp edge it once had and turned in to a plastic sword prop used in school plays. A warning to the younger generation, don't even start watching BET go straight to MTV2 they are more Hip-Hop now. BET is now a shadow of its former self trying to regain glory like a phoenix from the ashes, but they are more like a fish out of water.

This is my ranting and I am sticking to it and I am not going to change my mind. Also R.I.P Tookie Williams and the Terminator is a B****. I'll have a album review for you later. Holla back.

Bun B

Whut's up good people? This is your boy Xcal here to give you another hot album review. This time around we are going down to Texas and coming back with grillz and candy paint dripping off the frame of our cars. The review we are giving you is from a Texas legend, the true meaning of the word "Trill"...Bun B!

Trill is so so sick it is just a new south classic! Trill opens up with the song "The Inauguration" a presidental themed song naming Bun B the president of the south...T.I. may be the King of the South, but the U.S. stepped away from a monarchial system a long time ago. This track reintroduces Bun-B to everyone...new and old.

The lead single, "Draped Up" is a pure and unfiltered ode to Houston, Texas. Lil Keke(of The Original Screwed Up Click) gives a intro at the beginning of the song that will just knock you out. This song pays homage to everything that is Houston from the slabs(cars) to the grillz. The remix does more of the same bring all of H-Town in on the fun, surprisingly enough, do to all the family feuding in Houston.

"I'm Ballin" is the flossing track on the album. On this track Jazze Pha helps Bun-B talk about the joys of spending money. From sleeping on silk sheets, to choosing what car to drive, to buying out the mall. Not only does Jazze provide the chorus, but the beat as well. This one will leave you wanting to floss with them.

The most promising track on the album is "Get Throwed." This track brings UGK back together, but also picks up Jay-Z, Young Jeezy, and Z-Ro for the ride. The track reminds the listener of the UGK days,but also gets help for the Def Jam Prez, Houston's future, and Def Jam's "Trap Star." The beat is done by Slim Thug's production partner (Mr. Lee) and will easily become a favorite, the dark guitar makes the south fried beat a classic.

Getting help from a whole list of people, ranging from Jay-Z to the Ying Yang Twins, Bun-B's Trill is damn near a classic. When a artist like Bun can get respect from damn near everyone in the industry, you know he is the Trillest around. He even gets my mad respect. Side note,also listen to "The Story" it will explain everything you need to know about UGK.

GGGGGG-Unit!!!!!

Whut It Dew? This is the one and only DJ Xcal back to give you a piece of my mind once again. I know that you guys want to hurt me because of my over sarcastic views of hip-hop, but I don't care! Today's topic the new G-Unit. With the release of Get Rich or Die Tryin' the movie and soundtrack and the release of 50's game Bulletproof, November is G-Unit month.

Now within a span of about two years from 50's first album in 2003 to 2005 he has been slowly building up G-Unit. The first mission at was to put out a G-Unit album, Beg For Mercy, to introduce Young Buck (who at this time was picking up the slack while Tony Yayo was in prison) give people a taste of Lloyd Banks and hear more from 50 Cent. Next, the mission was to show that all the G-Unit soldiers could stand on their own two. Solo projects from Lloyd Banks (The Hunger For More) and Young Buck (Straight Outta Ca$hville) showed that 50's two soldiers were just as able bodied as he was at expanding the brand and making people want more. And give the people more is what 5-0 did. During the time of Buck's and Banks' solo albums, 50 expanded the brand by signing a shoe deal with Reebok and starting a clothes line in association with Ecko. From there The Game was next up, being one of the two new west coast artist on the label (Spider Loc is the other), this showed that 50 could expand his G-Unit empire...with a little help from Dr. Dre. Game's album did well, but so after he was kicked out of the Unit for not being a true soldier and riding for the whole team; after this Game went straight Aftermath( Dr.Dre's record label). Soon after 50's second album, The Massacre, was released and like the first sold very well. Around this time Tony Yayo got out of prison and his album was next to bat. Again, one of 50's soliders proved he could stand on his own two. During this time the G-Unit Army began to grow. Spider Loc, Olivia, Mobb Deep, M.O.P, and "Murda" Ma$e. 50 has also got Lil Scappy as a shared solider through a deal with Lil Jon's BME Recordings and is rumored to have sign B.G. (formally of Cash Money ). Okay history lesson over, time to break down the artists. Everyone put one their protective gear to make sure you are not harmed.

First lets talk about the G-Unit general himself, 50 Cent. Mr Interscope is a hustla. Come on you can not set here and tell me he is not. A successful record label, clothing and shoe deals, an 8 Mile-type movie of his very own, and his own video game. This man is making money! Lots of it! Hey Fif I will join G-Unit right now...all I want is a G-Unit Spinna with blue and black diamonds. As much love as I have for this man this does not escape that fact that his teeth are HUGE! I would feel sorry for Paul Wall if he ever had to make a grill for that man.

Next, Lloyd Banks, Droopy himself. You can not tell me he does not look like Droopy from the old cartoons. He, in my opinion, is one of the better artists on the label. He is one of those silent, but deadly types. I like him, he's Scrappy!

Ah yes Young Buck,the groups own personal Pig Pen; seriously he is. Have you ever notice Buck has a constant cloud of smoke round him. Buck gives G-Unit their southern style, I thought that he fit in from the begining. He did a Nice job of craving a spot for himself. Be warned, stay a good distance away from him, you might get a contact high.

Tony Yayo, is the groups own personal hype man. He yells more than he does? Nobody thats who! He is the only guy you know that went to jail off and on and had millions of dollars in the bank...thanks to 50. I like him he bring a flare all is own. Yayo is one of the oringinal G-Unit O.G.

Now for the only girl of the group...Olivia! Man she is sexy! She brings a soft touch to the Unit, but not too soft. O looks like she can whoop my ass! Come on she lifts weights with 50!

Next, QB's own Mobb Deep! They are G-Unit's own personal hobbits. These guys are small, but big at the same time. I love these guys...Quiet Storm was my joint! Out of the two I like Havoc the most. P is cool, but I like Hav because he is a producer too.I think I started to like them even more when Alchemist was added to the click. Now since joining G-Unit, I really hope these boys blow up.

M.O.P...these boys are like an army of two; very dangerous. I expected to have an album from them when they were with Roc-a-fella, but it never happened because of the Jay-Z and Dame split. Hopefully they will find success with the Unit. I see big thing for them and for M-O-B-B.

Last, but not least "Murda" Ma$e. When the hell did the "Murda" kick back in. What, was he waiting for it to come out since Diddy turned him into a singing dancing clown. So let me get this straight...G-Unit was the catalyst for the "Murda," right? Even the other G-Unit member were surprised by the good ministers actions. He is confused beyond belief

Well I would write on Lil Scrappy, but he is not an official member so I will hold off on that. Also check out the NEW G-Unit in this month's XXL-Love It or Hate Issue.

Nas' Options

Whut Tha Bizzness Is? Yo, your XLB is back in the house to give you a piece of my ever running mind again. The new topic is everyone's favorite QB big dog N-A-S.

Now if you have not heard by now big hommie Nas is a free agent and looking for a new home. Nas, if any one has been counting has been at Columbia/Sony for the last twelve years. Twelve years is too damn long to be at a record label that barely supports anything you put out! If there is a random chance that you stumble on to this Nas listen to me...LEAVE! You are a talented brother you can get the backing you deserve. Mr. N-A-S has a couple of options and I am going to break them down for you.

Option one is that Nas could go over to Atlantic Records. Now from what I am hearing he has been in talks to move over there. Now here is my personal opinion...DO NOT GO TO ATLANTIC, I repeat, DON'T! I am going to break it down and tell you why.
Atlantic Records has a pretty nice hip-hop squad. The team includes Bump J, Fat Joe, D4L, Fabolous, Elephant Man, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Juvenile, Lil Kim, Little Brother, Lupe Fiasco,Missy Elliott, Nappy Roots, P$C, Paul Wall, Rupee, Saigon, Sean Paul, T.I., Trick Daddy, Trina, Twista, Wayne Wonder, and Webbie.

Now four of these artist are dancehall artist, but are still hip-hop. Here is the thing about Atlantic, as many hip-hop artist as they have, this would not be the best environment for Nas. Most of the artist after a while will not get the backing that they deserve...like Little Brother and Handsome Boy. And from what I hear F-A-B-O-L-O-U-S has already made his way over to Def Jam, meaning he was not very happy at Atlantic. As nice as this roster may seem, it's only okay. Fat Joe's last album did not go over so well, Bump J and Lupe may or may not come out, Juve is just chillin', Nappy Roots fell off the face of the earth, D4L and Webbie just seem like quick money, T.I. is great and will be around for a long minute, but P$C leaves something to be desired, Lil Kim is in prison for a year and a day; so when she comes back who knows if she will have a deal, Missy is sounding like a broken record, Trick is O.G.; he'll make it, Trina is going strong and sexy(Lil Wayne you lucky somma),the four dancehall artist there will always have a fan base, and Twista, if he loses his deal he will probably go to Roc-a-fella. This is a unstable label, Nas will feel like a caged animal.

Option two is Def Jam, I mean just look at who is big boss over there.....Jay-Z! Just a week ago him and Nas officially eat the beef and proved two kings can own New York. Lets break down Def Jam's hip-hop roster.

There is Method Man, Redman, Joe Budden, DMX, Ghostface, LL Cool J, N.O.R.E, Juelz Santana, Slick Rick, Young Jeezy, Ludacris, Shawnna, Freeway, Foxy Brown, Kanye West, Peedi Peedi, Memphis Bleek, Rev Run, Beanie Sigel, the Roots, Teriyaki Boyz, Tru Life, Aztec, Sam Scarfo, and rumors have it Jadakiss, Fabolous, and the Lox, and last, but not least Jay-Z himself. Break down time, Jay-Z, if everyone his been watching him the past few months has been loading his gun sort of speak. Meth and Red are crazy and the best of the best on the label, DMX has auto problems and needs to work those out, Meth's Wu-Tang Brother Ghostface is dope and continues to go strong, Joe has been chillin' hard and I'm starting to worry if his new album will ever reach our ears, Luda is bringing the whole DTP with him; so that is making Def Jam even stronger, N.O.R.E he's a G, he's a G but laying quiet, the Roots are dope all the way around and are not going anywhere, LL has been there since 1985 he is not going anywhere and working on something new as we speak, Kanye is the biggest artist on the label and is bring G.O.O.D Music, TB is going to bring the Japanese funk to the U.S., Juelz and Jeezy are becoming the next Red and Meth; well trap versions anyway, Fox Boogie is losing her hearing; as of right now she is playing bench, Slick and Rev Run bring the Old Skool element to the label, Sam is Def Jam' s future, Freeway, Beanie, Tru, Aztec, Memp Bleek, and Peddi are the future of the Roc Army, and Fab, Jada, and the Lox make nice new family members.

Nas belongs here....by now your head should be cocked to the side looking for answers. Here are your answers; with all the new blood at Def Jam, Nas could really spread his wings and come up with some creative music with these artist. A big plus is Kanye is there, even though he said he is no longer making beats for people I think he will change his mind when it comes to Nas. And with talks of a Nas and Jay-Z album, this only seems like the natural choice. So lets be wise Nas, go to Def Jam please! It will be the best choice you will ever make as of right now. Lets bring New York back!!! NY STAND UP!!!
