Democratic Presidential nominee, Barack Obama, may have an the edge over his political opponent, Republican hopeful Sen. John McCain, as a new poll suggests a majority of Americans believe the Illinois senator will win the White House this November.
According to CNN, despite recent polls that placed Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain in a close Presidential race, in a new Gallup survey, Obama leads McCain by eleven percentage points- 52 percent to McCain's 41 percent. 76 percent of Democrats believe Obama will win while 67 percent of Republicans believe McCain will retain the party in the oval office.
Obama made history on June 3, by becoming the first African-American Presidential nominee ever, by defeating rival, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, to win the Democratic seat for the upcoming Presidential election.
In a poll conducted by SOHH in January, readers predicted Obama's Presidential nomination victory, with 70 percent of those polled favoring Obama or Clinton.
Now, Obama has garnered support from many Americans. Although both candidates enjoy support from independent voters, more independents believe Obama will upset McCain with 50 percent of their groups vote to Obama and 41 percent going to McCain.
In previous polls, Sen. McCain has polled better among older Americans, but in a twist, Obama projected as also winning the perception race among the senior citizens with 55 percent of Americans aged 55 and older declaring that Obama will win, while just 36 percent believing McCain will emerge victorious.
With Americans aged 35 to 54, the candidates are narrowly separated by nine percentage points, with Obama pulling in 52 percent to McCain's 43 percent.
Although, America's youth has supported Obama throughout the Democratic primary, the age group, 18 to 34, are essentially split over the candidates, with 48 percent of young Americans believing Obama will win while 45 percent feel McCain will win.
Men are also equally divided with 50 percent going with Obama to McCain's 44 percent.
However, women in the country aren't as split. Obama enjoys a significant lead in the female perception race with 54 percent of women selecting Obama to win the White House compared to McCain's 38 percent.
The Gallup poll was conducted June 9-12 and surveyed 822 adults nationally, aged 18 and older by telephone. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.
